Birth Story

Here it is, my birth story. I was originally due on the 17th of March but gave birth two weeks early. I had no idea it was going to happen. I somehow felt that I'll be giving birth early but I did not expect that it would be that early.

At 3:30 am, I woke up with a painful lower back. It was really painful, I thought I just slept in a really bad position. I got up, went to the toilet and went back to bed. The pain was gone but after a couple of minutes, it came back again. The pain was coming and going. I woke up Patrick, telling him that it really hurt and I think that I'm having contractions. He told me that I should time it to know if it is the real one. We were told by our midwife that there are Braxton Hicks, false labor and the real one and it could be identified on how far apart the contractions are. I did, and it confused me a lot. The contractions were 10 mins apart but it was really painful. I timed for an hour and I thought, if I could bear the pain, I might be able to wait till my weekly check up that afternoon.

After a couple of hours, I was still wasn't sure whether to call the midwife but the pain is getting unbearable. Still thinking that it was a false labor, we decided to call the midwife. She tried and counted how long apart my contractions were and said they weren't as close to each other but after another few attempts, she told me to go to the hospital. I wasn't ready with the baby stuff and mine but I didn't had any choice, I had to go.

It was 7 am and my partner drove me down to the hospital. It was probably the longest drive for him. I was screaming in pain and I can tell that he was panicking, didn't know how to calm me down. When we got to the hospital, we didn't know where to go. We haven't had a tour of the hospital and we were just about to do that on that day but it was too late. Luckily, there was a nurse who gave me wheelchair and showed us the direction. We still got lost, but we were able to find it because of the kind nurses there. The hospital's midwife helped me while waiting for my midwife to arrive. She checked everything and made sure baby's okay by listening to her heartbeat. When my midwife arrived, she told me what will happen and such. She told me to go to the bath tub because it might help with the pain. When I was ready to push, I was asked to go back to the bed. We tried every position there is because I wasn't comfortable. I felt like I wasn't doing it right. I was also expecting that there will be a couple of doctors and nurses to help with but there weren't any. When she asked me to breathe and push, it was only her and my partner who helped me. I wanted to ask why but because of the pain, I couldn't say anything. When my mom called me, I couldn't even tell her how much pain I was feeling. I was crying because I thought I couldn't do it. I told the midwife I wanted to have the pain reliever but she said that I can't have it anymore. So there I was, trying to push as much as I could. I told myself that I should do it as how the midwife told me to so that it would be done but the the thought of having only two people in the room kind of scares me, you know? What if something happens? However, Patrick was trying his best to calm me down which made me feel a little bit better. After two hours of pushing, my baby girl finally came out at 9:55 am. I was so relieved and that's when Patrick started to walk away because he couldn't bear seeing a lot of blood. She was so beautiful and tiny, much smaller than we expected. The first thing I thought about after that labor was about not having pictures during labor and also, having no clothes to wear afterwards. Luckily, his mom came just in time. She brought my clothes, toiletries and some other baby stuff. I was able to shower in peace although, it was quite hard and still a little painful but at least I'm clean.

Baby was weighed, checked and I breastfed her for the first time after that. That was probably the hardest thing I did. It was hard for me and took me a few times to manage and do it by myself. We were then moved to a room where we had to share with one other mom who also gave birth. They eventually left that afternoon so basically, we had the room for ourselves. Baby had her own bed beside me which was good. I thought she'd be place in nursery room or something like that.

Family and friends started visiting us in the afternoon. I was hungry through out the day because we weren't able to eat anything before we left the house, didn't pack food and the hospital food where nowhere to be found. Seriously, I was given a tray of food and when we moved to the other room, it was gone. They probably thought I didn't want it. Oh well, they bought KFC and Subway for me and I felt like I was in heaven when I ate. That's how hungry I was.

We stayed there for the night. They still helped me how to breastfeed and constantly checked if baby was okay. We left around dinner the next day. It was a great day, very unexpected but great. I was able to see my little angel early.
